Ellen gets organized with the KonMari method

ellen

Even the beloved Ellen Degeneres is talking about Marie Kondo’s bookThe Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up“. As Ellen points out in the video above, Kondo, or KonMari as she calls herself and her organizing method, does say some things in her book that make you giggle or at least roll your eyes and reach for another sip of your martini.

She says:

Socks need a vacation.

You should thank your purse for holding your crap all day.

Things that don’t exactly jive with our American culture of consumerism. (I talk a little about this in my interview on Japanese news here)

Still, I think an even funnier thing about this book is it’s lack of regard for children and their mounds and mounds and piles and stacks of detritus. Sharon Holbrook seems to agree with my sentiment in her hilarious article in the Washington Post this week: The art of magically tidying up your house (with kids)

EBay jumped on the KonMari bandwagon by suggesting you sell all of the things in your home that don’t spark joy to others via their long-standing auction site eBay.com.  As someone who has been into hundreds of homes helping people shed their stuff, I promise you that eBay is not the silver lining to your cloud of clutter.

Mama didn’t raise no fool. If you don’t have the energy to collect the piles around your house and take them to goodwill, you will not be motivated to spend 40-60 minutes on each item photographing it, listing it, selling it on eBay, and then shipping it.

Still, I do appreciate this PDF created by the folks at eBay which summarizes Kondo’s organizing method very succinctly. If you want the Reader’s Digest version of the book, this is it. The PDF says it’s for kids, but it applies to everyone. (I think the kids part is just a marketing ploy.)

If you haven’t gotten your hands on Marie Kondo’s book and you are looking for some organizing inspiration, I highly recommend reading it.

maybe it’s time to call in some friendly professional organizers.

I know a few! *winkwink*
