Only lazy people need to hire an organizer

I’ve been a professional organizer for many years. Often people who are naturally organized ask me incredulously, “What do you do for people? Why can’t they throw away their own trash?”

When you are born with the desire and ability to keep things in order, it’s easy to see other people’s disorder as a character flaw.

Looking beyond the clutter

[bctt tweet=”Many times the clutter we find in people’s houses is a symptom, not the actual problem. ” username=”getorganzdalrdy”]

A super messy house can be a symptom of relationship dysfunction, communication breakdown; a symptom of mental distress or even disorders.
Some disorders which can negatively impact your ability to keep a tidy house:

  • OCD
  • adult ADD
  • clinical depression
  • PTSD
  • trauma recovery
  • severe anxiety

Lazy Pants!

Dismissing disorganized people as just lazy is ridiculous. It’s like a healthy person saying, I would never take that drug or do that treatment. Good for you! YOU AREN’T SICK!

It isn’t just disorders which keep people from being organized.
How about people who aren’t naturally tidy for whatever reason. People like Einstein, for example; or passionate artistic personalities; my husband. (Here’s a video of him in his very messy workshop, fixing up a Vespa motor.)

Everyone needs a little extra help in some area of their life. For many people, that area is organizing their stuff, or letting go of things.

If you fall into any of these categories, it’s time to get some help.

Find an organizer you feel connected to. This shouldn’t be a hierarchical feeling, or anything annoying to overcome. Organizers are helpful people. But basically, they are people. Their lives aren’t perfect and yet they have a propensity toward order. Take advantage of that skill.

Conclusion

The top reasons people hire a professional organizer:

  • Downsizing to a smaller space
  • Overwhelmed by paper
  • Too busy to declutter regularly
  • Chronically disorganized or other psychological reason
  • Have trouble getting rid of things
